Psychedelic Integration: Merging Deep Insights into Your Daily Life
Integrating psychedelic experiences into your daily life can be a profound but sometimes overwhelming process. Whether you have been prescribed a medicine such as ketamine, or have participated in a clinical trial, guided ceremony, or independent journey with psychedelic medicine, these experiences often surface deep emotions, vivid imagery, and life-changing insights. Our psychedelic integration therapy provides a dedicated, non-judgmental space to process these encounters, helping you translate abstract peak experiences into concrete personal growth and lasting emotional wellness.
The afterglow period following a psychedelic session is a critical window for change. Without proper support, however, the clarity gained during a journey can quickly fade or feel difficult to reconcile with the demands of everyday life. Our sessions focus on grounding the experience—helping you make sense of difficult visions, reinforcing positive shifts in perspective, and developing actionable habits that honor the lessons you’ve learned.
We use an approach called the ACE model (Accept, Connect, Embody; Watts & Luoma, 2020) to help bridge the gap between your journey and your daily life. This means we work together to accept all parts of your experience without judgment, connect those insights to what you value most, and find ways to embody those changes through simple, daily actions.
If your journey felt deeply spiritual or shook your sense of what’s real or meaningful in your life, we also offer a space to explore those big questions. Instead of treating these shifts like something to be fixed, we see them as an invitation to be curious and to grow, helping you weave that sense of wonder into a life that feels more grounded and true to yourself.
The Roadmap: Your Journey Through Integration
Phase 1: Preparation (3–4 Sessions):
Before you begin your journey, we focus on building a strong, secure “launchpad.” Research shows that your mindset and environment (often called “set and setting”) are the biggest predictors of a safe and meaningful experience.
- Session 1: Getting to Know You. We’ll discuss your history, what brings you here, and any concerns you have about the process.
- Session 2: Intention Setting. Instead of rigid goals, we’ll help you form “loose” intentions that guide your journey while keeping you open to whatever comes up.
- Session 3: Building Your Toolkit. We’ll practice grounding and regulation techniques—like breathwork or somatic awareness—so you feel equipped to navigate intense emotions.
- Session 4: Logistics & Safety. We’ll cover the “nuts and bolts,” including harm reduction education and your re-entry plan for the days immediately following your experience.
Phase 2: The Journey (Off-site):
While we do not provide or supervise the administration of any substances, we are here to support you up until this point and will be waiting to help you process everything when you return.*
Phase 3: Integration (3–5 Sessions):
The “afterglow” period is a window of enhanced neuroplasticity—a time when your brain is more flexible and open to new ways of thinking. Our goal is to anchor your insights so they don’t fade away.
- Session 1: The Initial Download. Ideally held within 48–72 hours, this session is for sharing your story while it’s fresh. We’ll focus on validating your experience and simply being with what happened.
- Session 2: Sifting for Gems. We’ll look at the themes, symbols, and emotions from your journey to find the vital lessons that resonate with your personal values.
- Session 3: Moving Into the Body. Sometimes insights are hard to put into words. We may use creative arts or somatic movement to help you process the ineffable or non-verbal parts of your experience.
- Sessions 4–5: Real-World Action. We’ll turn your insights into tangible habits. Whether it’s setting a boundary, starting a new practice, or changing a perspective, we’ll help you weave your journey into the fabric of your daily life.
Common Questions
Is this legal?
Yes. Our work is focused entirely on psychological support, preparation, and integration. We do not provide, sell, or supervise the use of any medications or substances*. Talking about your past experiences or future intentions in a therapeutic setting is a safe and legal way to prioritize your mental health.
Many clients are looking for support around integrating ketamine experiences – ketamine is a legally prescribed medicine in Colorado, and at the federal level. Other clients wish to integrate psilocybin or other psychedelic journeys. Psilocybin (along with certain other related psychedelics) is legal to use in Colorado for adults aged 21 and older.
What if my experience was scary or confusing?
Challenging journeys are often the ones where the most growth happens, but they can be hard to handle alone. We provide a non-judgmental space to help you unpack difficult visions or emotions, turning what felt like a “bad trip” into a meaningful lesson.
Do I have to have a journey planned to work with you?
Not at all. Many clients start with the Preparation Phase just to explore their curiosity and learn grounding tools before deciding if they want to move forward with a personal experience.
Will my insurance provider pay for the cost of integration sessions?
Your insurer should cover the cost of integration sessions in the same way they cover the cost of other psychotherapy sessions. In our practice, we are paneled with select insurance plans and are happy to provide additional information about this upon request.
What if you don’t take my insurance, or I don’t wish to use my insurance for these sessions?
We have packages available for clients who wish to pay out of pocket for integration sessions, and can provide additional information about this upon request.
Will my sessions be confidential?
Absolutely. Just like any other therapy session, your privacy is protected by law. We provide a secure, shame-free zone where you can be completely honest about your experiences. Any exceptions to confidentiality (e.g., crisis situations, record requests from insurance) will be discussed thoroughly during the initial appointment.
Harm Reduction & Educational Focus
Our psychedelic integration services are rooted in a philosophy of harm reduction and psychological support. It is important to note that we do not provide, advocate for, or facilitate the use of illegal substances. Our role is strictly to provide a safe, therapeutic space for individuals to prepare for and process experiences they have chosen to undertake independently or in clinical research settings. Please note that we are not a licensed natural medicine healing center, and so we do not supply, administer, or recommend sources for any medicines, nor do we provide “trip-sitting” or in-person supervision during the active phase of a psychedelic experience.*
Our focus remains on mental health and wellness. We are here to help you navigate the psychological, emotional, and spiritual aspects of your journey within a legal and clinical framework. By focusing on preparation and integration, we aim to minimize potential risks and maximize the long-term benefits of your personal experiences. Our goal is simply to ensure that no one has to process these complex, powerful experiences alone. By merging supportive therapeutic techniques with an understanding of altered states of consciousness, we help you turn your journey into a coherent story of healing and self-discovery.
*Certain clients who are prescribed ketamine by physicians who collaborate closely with Ardern Psychology may be eligible to self-administer certain formulations of ketamine in our office, under the supervision of a trained mental health professional. Please contact us for additional information.
Psychedelic Integration Group:
If you’ve recently navigated a deep journey through a non-ordinary state of consciousness, you know that the “return” can feel a bit like landing on a different planet. Our Integration Group provides a warm, grounded space to help you make sense of those profound insights and bring them back down to earth. Rather than letting those experiences fade like a dream, we gather in a cozy, supportive office setting to help you turn “aha!” moments into real, lasting changes in your daily life. It’s a place to share your story without judgment and find a community that truly speaks the same language.
We keep things simple and intentional, moving away from rigid lectures and toward meaningful conversation. Each session starts with a moment to settle in and breathe, followed by an open-circle discussion where you can talk through what you saw, felt, or learned. Guided by a compassionate facilitator, we use creative tools like storytelling and mindfulness to help you weave those big realizations into your personal growth journey. It’s about more than just “talking about it”—it’s about finding practical ways to live out your new perspective with clarity and confidence.
Our Psychedelic Integration Group meets Thursdays from 4:30-5:30pm, at our conveniently located office in Golden. The cost per group session is $40, and you can start and end the group at any time! Pre-registration is required – call 303-955-2935 OR e-mail heidi@ardernpsychology.com for more information.
